FC Magpies began their 2026/27 Gibraltar Football League campaign with a 1–1 draw against Lions Gibraltar FC, in a match overshadowed by a worrying late incident involving club captain Kevagn Ronco.
Magpies started brightly and dominated large periods of the first half, controlling possession and pushing Lions deep into their own half. Despite enjoying the better of the play and creating several promising situations, Magpies were unable to find the breakthrough before the interval.
Lions, however, remained a constant threat on the counter-attack and showed their danger shortly after the restart.
In the 55th minute, a misplaced pass from the Magpies defence presented Lions with an opportunity to break quickly. The hosts capitalised on the mistake to open the scoring and take a 1–0 lead against the run of play.
Magpies responded positively and continued to push forward in search of an equaliser. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 77th minute, courtesy of substitute Alex Grachev.
A dangerous free-kick was delivered into the Lions penalty area, where Grachev rose to meet the cross and powered a superb header into the top corner. It was a memorable moment for the youngster, scoring his first senior goal for FC Magpies on his debut to bring the scores level at 1–1.
With momentum firmly behind them, Magpies went looking for the winner and forced the Lions goalkeeper into a number of important saves.
However, the match took a concerning turn in the 85th minute when club captain Kevagn Ronco suddenly collapsed on the pitch, with nobody around him.
Play was immediately stopped as medical teams rushed onto the field and Ronco received lengthy treatment before being taken to hospital for further assessment.
Thankfully, Ronco's condition improved and, as of writing, he was able to return home the following day. He will now undergo further tests as a precaution, with everyone at FC Magpies wishing our captain well.
Following the lengthy stoppage, play eventually resumed for approximately seven further minutes. Both sides attempted to find a late winner, but neither could produce the decisive goal.
The final whistle brought an end to a dramatic opening fixture, with the points shared.
While Magpies will feel their performance and periods of dominance deserved more, the football ultimately became secondary following the late incident involving Ronco.
